What Is Build to Print Plus?
BTP Plus is the right model when you need active engineering support alongside manufacturing execution. Most often, that’s because you’re releasing a product modification or update to an existing, already-in-market product, and need your existing mechanical or software design changed to accommodate it. It’s also the right fit when a design is complete but hasn’t been fully stress-tested against production realities, or needs improvement before it scales. Common triggers include:
- The design was developed in isolation from manufacturing realities
- The product modification affects mechanical components, embedded software, or both
- Components are difficult to source, or materials underperform under production conditions
- Assembly processes that work in a lab create bottlenecks at scale
- You’re integrating automation into an existing workflow and need expert input on how to do it without disrupting what’s already working

How Do You Know Which One You Need?
The clearest signal is the state of your design and how confident you are in its manufacturability.
Choose Build to Print if: Your design has been validated end-to-end, has survived rigorous testing, and is truly production-ready. You need a capable, disciplined manufacturing partner, not another design review. Bringing in additional engineering input at this stage can slow things down rather than accelerate them.
Choose Build to Print Plus if: You’re modifying an existing product’s mechanical or software design for a new release, your design is complete but hasn’t been fully stress-tested against production realities, or you’re planning to integrate new automation into an existing assembly process.
Questions worth asking your team:
- Has this design been manufactured at scale before, or are we doing it for the first time?
- Are there components or materials we’re uncertain about under production conditions?
- Are we modifying an existing, already-released product, and does that change touch mechanical or software design?
- Are we integrating robotics or automation, and do we have a clear picture of how that changes the workflow?
- How much runway do we have if a significant design issue surfaces mid-production?
If the answers reveal uncertainty, BTP Plus is probably worth the investment.

The Cost of Getting It Wrong
It’s worth being direct about the stakes here.
Choosing Build to Print when your design still has manufacturability gaps can mean discovering those problems on the production floor, after tooling is set, supply chain is committed, and timelines are locked. That’s an expensive place to find out your component tolerances don’t hold at volume, or your assembly process creates quality variance that fails inspection. For product modification programs specifically, this risk shows up when a design or software change is approved to be manufactured before the impact on tolerances, sourcing, or assembly has been fully vetted.
Choosing Build to Print Plus when your design is genuinely production-ready adds an engineering layer you don’t need and can introduce unnecessary review cycles that push your launch date.
A thoughtful upfront conversation with your manufacturing partner, ideally as early as possible in the process, is the most reliable way to land in the right model from the start.
